Ahane GAA club sadly reports the passing of one of its great stalwarts, Matt Whelan RIP.

Originally from North Kerry, Matt came into the parish in the 60's and had a hugely positive impact on the community. He became heavily immersed in the Ahane GAA club, playing both hurling and football, before taking on many pivotal roles to help run the club.

Matt served the club as Chairman for 9 years, which culminated in him being one of the main instigators and driving forces behind the development of the fabulous clubhouse which we have today. Having ensured this huge project was completed to his high standards, Matt stepped away from his role as Chair to manage the club bar on a voluntary basis for many years after. Matt rarely missed a game during his tenure at the club, and was delighted when the Daly Cup finally returned to the Clubhouse in 1998. While a huge admirer of the small ball game, Matt, being a Kerry man by birth, always had the scope to pass on some football wisdom attained in his native county when opportunity arose.

The club passes its condolences to Matt's wife Eileen, son Eamonn, daughters Siobhan, Eileen and Eithne, and his large extended family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
