Ahane GAA club was founded in 1926 and is situated in East Limerick approx. 6 miles from Limerick City and within 2 miles of the University of Limerick campus. It covers the parochial area of Ahane, Castleconell and Montpelier and has 3 National schools. The population of the Parish has grown enormously in recent years. We welcome this growth and the challenges and opportunities it presents. Every young person in the parish is encouraged to come along to the field and perfect their skills at hurling, football and camoige.
Within a few years of its foundation, Ahane became one of the leading hurling teams in Ireland along with Blackrock and Glen Rovers in Cork, Thurles Sarsfields and Toomevara, Tipperary, Faughs in Dublin and Tullaroan in Kilkenny. In the Thirties and Forties, Ahane won an unprecedented 15 county senior hurling and 5 county senior football titles. Ahane players played a major part in the success of the great Limerick teams in the Thirties and early Forties - the Golden Age of Limerick Hurling - whilst Timmy Ryan in 1934 and Mick Mackey in 1936 and 1940 had the honour as Captain of bringing the McCarthy Cup to Limerick and Ahane. Another senior hurling title was added in 1955. Inevitably, after such a successful era a lean period followed and whilst the senior hurling team of the Seventies was amongst the best in the County they could not make that crucial breakthrough to win county honours.
However, with the purchase of fine new playing fields in Newgarden in 1982, a new era dawned. The club gave total commitment to the development of under-age teams and are now reaping a rich harvest. Today, Ahne has the finest collection of dedicated players from under 8 up to senior level. Major achievements in recent years have been the winning of county titles in 1982 U.14 Hurling, 1984 and 2006 U.16 Hurling, 1986 U21 Hurling, 1991 Minor Hurling, 1992 Minor Football, 1998, 1999 and 2004 Senior Hurling. Several U12 and U14 county and Feile titles have been won in recent times culminating in our finest moment when the U14 Feile team won the All-Ireland Feile title in 2004 bringing the Christy Ring trophy to Limerick for the first time in 20 years. Most recently Ahane secured the prestigious Limerick Premier Minor County Championship in 2014. Ahane currently have 2 senior players on the Limerick Senior Hurling panel brothers Dan and Tom Morrissey. Success within the club is largely due to the teachers in the school and the dedicated trainers and selectors of the various teams. Since 1992 Ahane has also excelled at camoige producing many InterCounty players, winning a number of County Championships and reaching several All-Ireland finals.
In 1995, our spacious new clubhouse, incorporating modern dressing rooms, bar and function rooms was officialy opened and has become a focal point for the whole Community and outside of G.A.A. activities is utilised for chess, Irish Dancing, Scouts, etc. The club subsequently purchased adjoining lands and our additional new playing fields were opened in Spring 2008. And so the traditional Ahane GAA battle cry of ‘Come on Ahane, the spuds are boilin’ is still alive and well. Today, Ahane is a thriving and forward looking club with excellent playing fields, a spacious new clubhouse, incorporating modern dressing rooms, bar and function rooms and has become a focal point for the whole Community.
